Volunteer with us!

  • Rewards of volunteering
    • We could not do our work, and have any impact at all, without the committed support of our volunteer team. Volunteers are also members of WECHCPC, and play a vital role in shaping the direction and priorities of our organization.
    • Volunteering with WECHCPC is a way of giving back to your community; of taking a positive and proactive role in helping maintain and grow a safer, more inclusive West End and Coal Harbour. It’s an opportunity to make meaningful connections with neighbours, merchants, and visitors in our community, and to make a difference in their lives.
    • Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Some are employed, others are retired, and still others are students (many of whom are preparing for careers in law enforcement).
    • We take our role of mentoring and training volunteers seriously: in addition to training in our various program areas, we also provide opportunities to learn new skills and capacities, connect with VPD, and learn about crime and safety trends and responses.
  • Volunteer responsibilities & requirements
    • You must be 18+ (although we have a program for youth, see below), and complete a criminal record check.
    • You must be able to read, write, and converse in English, and be comfortable interacting with the public.
    • You are a team player, able to present a professional demeanour, and maintain confidentiality.
    • You are prepared to volunteer a minimum of four hours per month.
    • Volunteers work in our storefront office, and outreach events. Additionally trained volunteers join our foot patrol team, Foot patrollers are eligible for bike patrol training.
  • Youth Action Initiative
    • The Youth Action Initiative (YAI) is an opportunity for young people ages 16 and 17 to participate in socially responsible projects in a safe and structured environment, under the guidance of adult supervisors. The program is ideal for those wanting to help grow a safer more inclusive community, as well as youth interested in exploring careers in law enforcement or community development.
    • YAI participants help out with community clean-ups, info pop-ups, bike registrations, safety presentations, and speed and sidewalk safety watches. The program also provides opportunities for special events, workshops, and networking.

Our Work is Supported By

We could not do our work without the generous support of the community. WECHCPC is incorporated as a not-for-profit society: Our operations are funded entirely through grants, gifts, and donations.

The bulk of our funding comes through an annual grant from the City of Vancouver; supported by funding from the Province of British Columbia, the West End Business Improvement Association, ICBC; and donations and gifts from organizations and individuals, like you.

Where your support goes

Your gift to WECHCPC supports our programming and operations, making possible the purchase of:

  • Patrol equipment, supplies, and apparel
  • Safety devices and printing brochures for distribution
  • Workshops and training for volunteers (e.g., first aid, self-defence, patrol training)
  • Promotion and messaging of safety information on social media
  • Wellness items and food for vulnerable and unhoused people

In-kind donations

We are pleased to accept donations of items which support our work. If you want to make a gift along those lines, please contact the Executive Director at executivedirector@wechcpc.com to discuss how our needs may coincide with your intentions.

For clothing, hygiene, or other items that we distribute to vulnerable and unhoused people, please review our Clothing Donation Policy

Donations in excess of $20 will receive a receipt for income tax purposes. Our CRA charitable number is 868581570 RR 0001.

    • If your organization or group would like to work with us, or invite us to present, please contact executivedirector@wechcpc.com.

Event Support

Our volunteers are trained to assist with crowd and traffic management, including the staffing of barricades; and these skills are frequently deployed for runs, parades, and other public events in our neighbourhood.

If your organization or business is sponsoring a permitted public event, which you think our volunteers may be able to support, please reach out to us as executivedirector@wechcpc.com.
