Monthly Focus

Spring is the season when everyone starts becoming more active out-of-doors. For us, this means more community clean-ups, sidewalk safety watches, speed watches, Project 529 Bike Safety Days, and safety info pop-ups.

Check out our calendar to find out what we have on the go and where to find us.

One of the big events we’re planning for is the FIFA World Cup, happening June 13 through July 7. We’ll have increased patrols, including night patrols; safety pop-ups on match days, and we’ll be distributing info to tourist accommodations and car/bike rental establishments on staying safe and how to report crimes.

April 8 and 29 will be our first Sidewalk Safety Watches of the season. Volunteers, joined by one or more VPD officers, will be stationed at various locations around the West End, reminding operators of bikes and scooters that they are legally required to be on the road surface or a designated cycling lane while riding.

Volunteers also remind cyclists of some of the other laws and regulations to stay safe while on the roads, such as wearing a helmet, using lights when operating in the dark, and obeying stop signs and traffic signals. Remember: your bike or scooter is a vehicle, and safe operation protects both you and pedestrians.

Our office has bike safety tips and cycling route maps – We can also register your bike/scooter for free through project 529. This online registry identifies your bike or scooter, helps prevent theft, and helps police and the public locate stolen or lost bikes/scooters, so they can be reunited with their owners.
